“All She Wanted Back Was…”
Welcome to the House with the Red Door. Let us try to reclaim that which was taken and lost.
To Nihongo or Deutsche?
So, this is an experiment to test my ability to commit to finally learning a second language (aye, can you spot the American?). My biggest struggle is that I am not very sociable and do not interact much with people. How do you learn a language if you don’t like to talk? How do you do art if you’re blind? Life is full of paradoxes. Whatever. So the two contenders are Japanese and German (WWII allies, what are the odds?) I love the writing system and clear syllables of Japanese, but German is immediately valuable to me. I’ll pursue German to a (hopefully) conversational and technical level. My goal in ten years is to advance in my current company and get stationed in Germany. I’ve never been past the Mason–Dixon line. One day I’ll fly. Until then, let’s use the collective of human knowledge known as “Google” to learn a language.
So, who is this random internet person and why should I care?
I guess I should introduce myself. I am a first generation, Vietnamese-American girl living one of the southern states of America (relatively close in location to the mythical “Florida Man”). I have a twin brother who is going to the rival college of the one I went to. Recently, I adopted the most adorable, headstrong toy poodle I lovingly named “Puppacinno.” My degree is in Plant and Environmental Science, but by some twist of fate, I ended up working in a manufacturing plant…not the right “plant,” but it pays the bills. 2019 was deceitfully good to me after 2018 was hell. I wonder how 2020 will play out?
Now to answer the second question. There is no reason to care. We live, we die, we are forgotten. It entertains me to think I could document the learning of a new language. There has to be some trend to this. Maybe one day computers can just auto translate for us. That would be nice. Until then, we’ll have these language barriers (even with fluent 2nd language speakers). Fun times!
